THE CHRYSLER PARTNERS WITH BLUE STAR MUSEUMS TO HONOR MILITARY FAMILIES
|
|
— Museum is one of more than 600 nationwide to participate in NEA program this summer —
|

This summer the Chrysler Museum of Art joins the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and more than 600 museums across America to offer free general admission to all active-duty military personnel and their immediate families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2010.
The Chrysler is proud to be largest of the eight organizations in the greater Hampton Roads area to participate. Since the Museum already offers free admission to its permanent collection Wednesdays through Sundays, the Chrysler is expanding the scope of the Blue Star Museums program for its active-duty military guests. “As a small gesture of gratitude for the sacrifices made by the families of our servicemen and women, in addition to free admission, the Museum is pleased to offer them Member for a Day privileges,” says Bill Hennessey, director of the Chrysler. These include free admission to all special exhibitions, café and gift shop discounts, and complimentary coffee in Huber Court. The Museum also has created a special self-guided family tour and guide, which is available at the Welcome Desk. All children who complete the gallery activity may claim a special free prize in The Museum Shop.
The Chrysler Museum always offers discounted household memberships for active-duty military families, and additional Blue Star Museums initiatives may be announced over the summer.
MUSEUMS AND MILITARY ARE NATURALLY COMPLEMENTARY
useums offer members of all branches of the military service, Reservists, and National Guard members and their families an unprecedented opportunity to learn more about the country they serve.
“I cannot imagine a better way to do that than welcoming them in to explore and enjoy the extraordinary cultural heritage our museums present,” says NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman.
“The works of art on view this summer will inspire and challenge viewers, and sometimes they will just be a great deal of fun.”
“The scale of this gift from the museum communities to military families is thrilling,” says Blue Star Families Chairman Kathy Roth-Douquet, who is married to a Marine Corps officer deployed to Afghanistan. The couple has two children. “Military families work hard for this country, and it is gratifying for us to be recognized for that,” she says. Roth-Douquet anticipates that thousands of military families like hers will visit museums this summer – many of them for the first time. The participating organizations represent a broad range of focuses and include art, history, science, cultural, and children’s museums. The complete list of Blue Star Museums, a searchable map, and answers to frequently asked questions are available at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.
ABOUT THE SPONSORS
Blue Star Families is a national, non-partisan, non-profit network of military families from all ranks and services including guard and reserve, with a mission to support, connect and empower military families. In addition to morale and empowerment programs, Blue Star Families raises awareness of the challenges and strengths of military family life with civilian community and leaders. Membership includes spouses, kids, parents, service members, veterans, and civilians.
Operation Appreciation is an initiative of Blue Star Families that seeks to connect military families to the larger community. Blue Star Families 2009 annual survey shows that 94 percent of military families feel that the larger community doesn’t truly understand or appreciate the sacrifices we make for the country. Through initiatives such as Blue Star Museums, Blue Star Families provides avenues for the larger community to show that they do understand, in meaningful ways that enrich the lives of military service members, spouses, children, and parents. For more information, please visit www.BlueStarFam.org.
The National Endowment for the Arts is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts – both new and established – bringing the arts to all Americans, and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Arts Endowment is the largest annual national funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases.
The Chrysler Museum of Art is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums with a world-class collection of more than 35,000 objects, including one of America’s great glass collections.
The Museum is located at 245 West Olney Road in Norfolk and is open Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Thursdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays, noon-5 p.m. The Chrysler is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as on major holidays. Admission to the Museum’s permanent collection is free to all, though special exhibitions may have an admission fee. For exhibitions, programming, and special events, visit www.chrysler.org or call (757) 664-6200.
