Artist Exhibition Opportunity
Call for Proposals

Submission Deadline: Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Cultural Affairs is accepting proposals from professional contemporary artists interested in a solo or 2 person exhibition in the Selden Gallery. Artwork may be of any medium or discipline, including 2D, 3D, video, performance or inter-disciplinary work. Artists are invited to submit a proposal for review to the Selden ’s visual arts committee whose focus is high caliber content-driven art. The Gallery favors intellectual work that does not sacrifice visual appeal in the service of thoughtful content.

The Selden Gallery, an established formal exhibit space, is located on the 2nd floor at the Plume Street entrance to the Selden Arcade. The loft style gallery is elegantly appointed with bamboo flooring, 14’ ceilings, and state of the art lighting.

Hermitage Museum and Gardens
Spiritual Visions: Crossing Boundaries, Making Connections
Submission Deadline: September 16, 2010

The Hermitage Museum and Gardens invites emerging and professional artists to explore the concept of giving a contemporary voice to expressions of spiritual iconography. All of us are influenced by religion, spirituality or mysticism in some way; how does it affect your work? What are your spiritual visions?

Submit works in all media that the museum is able to display.

Important Dates:
· Entries Due: September 16th
· Notice of Acceptance: October 1st
· Exhibition Opening: December 16th
· Exhibition Dates: December 17th - February 2nd

Exhibition and Awards: With selection for this exhibition, artists will give the Hampton Roads Community the chance to enjoy their work. It will also be a chance for curators, collectors and consultants to view the work.

· Juror's Choice Awards: 1st Place: $300, 2nd Place: $200, Gallery Visitor's Choice Award: $100

Eligibility:
This juried exhibition is open to artists world wide, working in all forms of media that our galleries are able to accommodate, including painting, print making, mixed media, sculpture and photography. Please note that pieces submitted for entry will have to be no taller than 70 inches and no wider than 50 inches. Photographs must me matted and framed in black frames, with reasonable hanging mechanisms. Paintings must have finished edges and reasonable hanging mechanisms. 3 dimensional art may be shown outdoors or shown on a pedestal.

CALL TO ARTISTS - FELLOWSHIPS
2010-2011 Artist Fellowships - Works on Paper

Submission Deadline: October 1, 2020

Purpose:
To recognize the creative excellence of individual Virginia artists and to support their pursuit of artistic excellence.

Description:
Four fellowships are available to professional artists living in Virginia. Funding in this category is highly competitive.

Deadline:
October 1, 2010, for applications in WORKS ON PAPER. Applications must be received by the Commission on or before 5:00 p.m., October 1, 2010. The Commission does not accept application materials via fax or email.

Amount of Assistance:
Artists will be considered for fellowships of $5,000. Artists are not required to provide matching funds.

Eligibility:
Artists who are legal residents of Virginia at the application deadline and who plan to remain a Virginia resident during the grant period are eligible to apply. A legal resident has a valid Virginia driver's license and/or pays income taxes in Virginia and/or is a registered Virginia voter. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. An individual may receive only one fellowship from the Commission within any four-year period.

Criteria:
Applications are evaluated on consistent quality of the artist's work, the applicant’s record of professional arts activity and achievement, and the potential for the fellowship to result in significant advancement in the applicant’s career.

Application Review & Payment Procedure:
Applications are reviewed by an advisory panel of professionals in the appropriate discipline. The board of the Virginia Commission for the Arts will make all final funding decisions. Results will be announced in December.

Application Submission Checklist:
A complete application must contain SIX (6) stapled copies collated (please do not use binders or folders) in the following order:
• Applicant information page
• Artist Narrative. No more than 1 page (8˝" x 11").
• Artist's Resume.
Only ONE (1) copy of each of the following is needed:
• Work sample and list: One set of 9 DIGITAL IMAGES
• Self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of work sample
• A completed National Standard for Arts Information Exchange Form (for reporting purposes only; will NOT be considered during the grant making process)
Refer to the instructions attached for details on preparing your application. Any application not containing all of the items listed above will be considered incomplete and will be returned with a brief explanation.

Symphonicity Chorus Auditions

WHO: Symphonicity-the Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach

WHAT: Auditions for Symphonicity Chorus

DETAILS: Symphonicity, the Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach will be holding auditions for all voice parts in its chorus. These auditions will be in preparation for its annual choral concert on February 27, 2011 at 3 PM at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts at Town Center in Virginia Beach. The work being performed is Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, in honor of the 30th Anniversary of Symphonicity.

Symphonicity, the Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach, provides a challenging performance experience for area musicians and fills a need for low cost, quality concerts in the community. The orchestra has over 100 members, who give freely of their time and talents. Membership is composed of retired and active symphony players, public school teachers, instructors at and graduates of the Armed Forces School of Music, freelance musicians, private instructors and composers, as well as business professionals, homemakers, and select high school students. Symphonicity, formerly known as the Virginia Beach Symphony Orchestra, was formed in 1981, under the baton of its current Music Director and Conductor, David S. Kunkel.
